Working with Pebble Studios and CTL Communications, Weald Creative worked as a production partner on this Augmented Reality quiz for a pharmaceutical product called Spiolto Respimat. We developed the idea and pulled together a team including 3D art from 099 Creative and Unity development from Hawken King.
CTL were building a stand at the ERS International Congress in Barcelona and were keen to showcase the Spiolto Respimat product in a fun and engaging way. The idea was simple, build a quiz to educate the visitor on the product but make it immersive and engaging.
We brainstormed the idea and came up with a solution that involved using Augmented Reality. We would place a circular, branded vinyl sticker on the floor of the stand, and using Image Tracking technology in an iPad app, we can grow a virtual tree out of the ground. This tree would conceal special interactive leaves that the user can discover to trigger questions. The questions would be simple multiple choice and participants would need to complete them all to be submitted to a leaderboard.
We worked closely with Carlo from 099Creative to design a tree that would grow out of the ground and be at just the right height for users to explore without getting disorientated. We kept the style of the tree in keeping with the campaign graphics that were being utilised on the stand.
We developed an intuitive mechanism for the user to select the quiz leaves without having to let go of the iPad and tap the screen. We used proximity to the leaf to animate a reticle on-screen. When in line-of-sight and close enough to the leaf, it would open the question panel. This minimised the risk of participants dropping the iPad when manoeuvring around the space.
The Tree was modelled and rigged in Blender and then imported into Unity. We used AR Foundation as the framework to manage the Augmented Reality. The image marker was printed on vinyl at one metre square and then cut into a circle design.
We recorded how long a participant took with the quiz and correct answers were then submitted to a Leaderboard. We used Google Firebase to store the data in the cloud.
The weekend of the conference was extremely busy and the Spiolto Respimat stand was non-stop with eager visitors trying out the Augmented Reality Quiz. The client, the agency and everyone involved with the project were very happy with the results.
